Behind the Scenes: How We Set Up for a Newborn Session

Written by Emma Williams — Newborn Safety & First Aid Certified Photographer, Founder of Manawa Studio.

If you've ever scrolled through a gallery of newborn photos and wondered "how on earth do they get a five-day-old baby to sleep so peacefully in that pose?" — you're not alone. It's one of the questions we get asked more than almost any other, so we filmed the whole process to show you exactly what goes on before, during, and after a Manawa newborn session.

Why Setup Takes Longer Than the Shoot Itself

A newborn session might only produce twenty or thirty final images, but the setup behind each pose can take anywhere from twenty minutes to over an hour. Here's what's actually happening before the camera ever comes out:

The room is warmed first. Newborns are only comfortable — and only settle into a deep, photographable sleep — when the room is significantly warmer than what feels comfortable for adults. We heat the studio well ahead of every session so baby never feels a change in temperature.

Every prop is safety-checked. Baskets, wraps, and posing beanbags are inspected and cleaned before each family arrives. Nothing is ever balanced in a way that isn't fully supported from underneath, even when a photo makes it look otherwise — every "floating" pose you see online is actually built from safely stacked, hidden supports and composited or spotted, not a baby left unsupported.

We work around the baby, not the schedule. Newborn sessions are planned loosely by design. If baby needs a feed, a nappy change, or simply more time to settle, the whole session pauses. This is why we build generous time into every booking rather than rushing from pose to pose.

Parents are part of every decision. Before we try any pose, we talk it through with you. You'll always know what's about to happen, and you're welcome to say no to any pose you're not comfortable with — this is your baby's first photo shoot, and it should feel that way.

What This Means for You as a Parent

Understanding what's happening behind the scenes tends to put nervous parents at ease faster than almost anything else we can say. Once you see how deliberate and gentle the process really is, the idea of your own newborn session usually feels a lot less daunting.

Frequently asked...

Is it safe for newborns to be posed the way they are in photos?

Yes, when done by an experienced newborn photographer. Every pose is either fully supported by the baby's own strength and reflexes, or built using hidden supports, spotting hands, or composite images — babies are never left unsupported in a genuinely unsafe position.

How old should my baby be for a newborn session?

Most newborn sessions are booked within the first 5–14 days, while babies are still naturally sleepy and easy to pose. Older babies can absolutely still be photographed beautifully — the style and approach just shifts.

How long does a newborn session actually take?

Between two and four hours is typical, to allow time for feeding, settling, and unhurried posing.
