Celebrating One of Baby's Most Precious Milestones

One of the greatest joys of photographing babies is watching their personalities begin to emerge. The Little Sitters stage is often filled with curious expressions, infectious laughter and an eagerness to explore the world around them. It's a wonderful milestone that lasts for such a short time, making it one of the most rewarding stages to preserve.

Unlike the sleepy newborn days, Little Sitters sessions are interactive. Every smile, every glance and every giggle comes from your little one's growing curiosity and confidence. They are beginning to discover the world around them, and that sense of wonder shines through in every portrait.

If you're wondering whether your baby is ready or what to expect, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know.

When Is the Best Time for a Little Sitters Photography Session?

The ideal time for a Little Sitters session is usually between seven and nine months of age, when your baby is sitting confidently without support but hasn't yet become an adventurous walker.

Although some parents feel their baby is sitting independently at six months, in my experience they are rarely quite ready for a full Little Sitters session. Every child develops differently, and waiting until they are confidently balanced allows us to create a much wider variety of natural portraits.

If your little one has just started crawling, that's absolutely fine too. Crawling babies often add wonderful personality to a session. The only difference is that they may be less interested in sitting in smaller props such as chairs or swings, as they're excited to explore everything around them. That's completely normal, and the session simply adapts to suit their stage of development.

The most important thing is photographing your baby as they are, rather than trying to make them fit into a particular pose or expectation.

Preparing for Your Session

One of the things parents often tell me afterwards is how relaxed the experience felt. There's no rush when you arrive. Instead, we'll spend time settling in, chatting about the outfits you've brought and allowing your little one to become familiar with the studio. Babies are wonderfully observant, and giving them a chance to explore their surroundings helps them feel comfortable before we even think about taking photographs.

Little Sitters sessions usually last between one and two hours, allowing plenty of time for breaks, outfit changes and those quieter moments if your baby simply needs a little reassurance.

Choosing Outfits

I usually recommend bringing around three outfits that reflect your family's style and personality. Whether you love soft neutral tones, timeless classics or something a little more playful, we'll choose combinations that photograph beautifully and complement the carefully styled sets within the studio.

There is also a collection of studio outfits available, selected specifically to create elegant, timeless portraits that won't date with changing fashions. They work beautifully with the studio backdrops and allow your little one's personality to remain the focus of every image.

If you've previously visited MANAWA for your maternity or newborn session, we can even recreate elements of those portraits to build a beautiful visual timeline of your family's journey together.

Building Trust Comes Before Beautiful Photographs

One of the questions I'm asked most often is how I capture such natural smiles

The answer is simple. We don't begin by expecting photographs. We begin by building trust.

Some babies are immediately curious, while others prefer to watch quietly before joining in. Both are perfectly normal. Every session is guided by your little one's personality and temperament.

I'll spend time chatting, playing and introducing them to the different sets. They often enjoy looking at the camera, touching safe props and even seeing their own photographs appear on the back of the screen. It's wonderful watching their confidence grow as they realise this new environment is somewhere they can explore safely.

If your little one brings a favourite teddy or comfort toy, I often photograph that first. It helps create a gentle distinction between the toy and themselves while making the camera feel familiar and fun. Before long, many little ones want to help photograph Teddy too—and that's often where the biggest smiles begin.

What If My Baby Doesn't Settle?

This is something many parents quietly worry about before arriving. The truth is, babies have good days and difficult days, just like adults. If your little one becomes upset, we simply pause. We'll move away from the set, sit together on the sofa, enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and allow your baby to reset at their own pace. There is never any pressure to continue before they're ready.

Occasionally, a little one simply decides that today isn't their day—and that's perfectly okay. Rather than rushing through a session or expecting them to work to our timetable, we'll simply arrange another date. Childhood shouldn't feel rushed, and neither should your photography experience.

More often than not, when they return they recognise the studio, remember the experience and settle beautifully because everything already feels familiar.

Why Parents Can Relax

One of the most important parts of a Little Sitters session is something many parents don't expect. I encourage you to relax.

Of course you'll be close by throughout the session, but once your little one begins engaging with me, I gently encourage parents to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and simply watch everything unfold. There's a simple reason for this. If your baby is laughing with Mum or Dad, that's naturally where they'll look. By allowing me to build a connection with them, their attention stays focused on our interaction, creating those beautiful moments of eye contact and genuine expression that make Little Sitters portraits so special.

Many parents tell me afterwards how lovely it was to simply sit back and enjoy watching their child's personality shine without needing to entertain them themselves.

Keeping the Focus Where It Belongs

Little Sitters sessions are designed with one goal in mind: celebrating your child. The studio styling is intentionally timeless, using carefully chosen props and simple backdrops that complement rather than distract. Your little one should always be the centre of every portrait.

If there's something meaningful you'd like to include, perhaps a special toy, heirloom or sentimental item, you're more than welcome to bring it along. Together we'll decide whether it complements the session and find the perfect place for it naturally within the photographs.

A Milestone Worth Remembering

One of my favourite things about Little Sitters Photography is witnessing the stage where personality truly begins to blossom. The smiles become bigger. The laughter becomes louder. Curiosity takes over. Every sound, texture and expression is new, and every session is completely unique because every child experiences the world in their own wonderful way.

It's a chapter that passes incredibly quickly, but one that deserves to be remembered just as much as the newborn days that came before and the first birthday celebrations still to come.

For many families, these portraits become another beautiful piece of their story—a reminder of who their little one was at this remarkable stage of childhood.
